ADAS Calibration Cost After a Body Shop Repair
ADAS calibration after a collision repair averages $600 (approx) (Repairer Driven News, 2025) in Mitchell's estimate data, and the repair behind it sets the rest of the bill. Static calibration suits shops with a level indoor bay and works in any season; dynamic calibration needs less equipment but can stall on snowy roads or in heavy rain. Dealers fit complex static jobs, and a body shop with its own equipment saves trips.
ADAS calibration is the step that re-aims a car's cameras, radar and other sensors after a repair moves them, so features like automatic emergency braking and lane keeping see the road where they should. CCC counted a calibration on 23 % (Repairer Driven News, 2025) of repairable appraisals, so it's now a routine line rather than a rare extra. The cost depends on what was repaired: AAA found that ADAS parts and labor in a minor front collision repair came to $1,541 (AAA, 2023 MY vehicles (F-150, Rogue, Camry)) on its test vehicles, and for windshield cameras Opus IVS used 300-400 USD per calibration (Repairer Driven News, 2023) per calibration in AutoBolt's windshield calibration coverage. Static calibrations happen indoors with targets on a level floor, so they need space, training and equipment. Dynamic ones happen on the road, and AutoBolt's report notes they can be impossible on snow-covered roads, in heavy rain or traffic, or with the sun low. After a covered crash, the calibration normally sits on the estimate as its own line, sometimes as a sublet to a dealer. Ask for the pre-repair and post-repair scans and the calibration report before you pick the car up.

What ADAS calibration costs after a collision repair
ADAS calibration after a collision repair costs $600 (approx) (Repairer Driven News, 2025) on average in Mitchell's data, and that figure covers the calibration line alone, not the sensor it re-aims. How often you'll see the line keeps climbing: CCC's Q4 2025 Crash Course report put at least one calibration on 35.6% of direct repair program estimates in Q3 2025, up from 26.9% a year earlier.
CCC's broader count points the same way. A calibration showed up on 23 % (Repairer Driven News, 2025) of repairable appraisals in its data. Mitchell and CCC count differently, so read their numbers as signs of a trend rather than a single national rate.
The calibration is often only part of the ADAS bill. When a sensor itself is damaged, the part and its labor come on top: AAA's study put individual ADAS component costs at $290–$1,596 (Repairer Driven News (trade press, Dec 2023)). Your own estimate should show the sensor part, the scan and the calibration as separate lines, and that split is what you compare against these figures.
ADAS calibration cost by repair: bumper, mirror, windshield, alignment
ADAS cost after a collision depends mostly on which repair disturbed the sensors, and AAA's 2023 study found that ADAS parts and labor in a minor front collision repair came to $1,541 (AAA, 2023 MY vehicles (F-150, Rogue, Camry)) on its test vehicles. The study looked at three popular models, so read its figures as examples of scale, not prices for your car.
| Repair that triggered it | Sensors often involved | Published ADAS cost figure |
|---|---|---|
| Front collision (bumper, grille) | Front radar, front camera, parking sensors | $1,541 (AAA, 2023 MY vehicles (F-150, Rogue, Camry)) for ADAS parts and labor in AAA's test repairs |
| Rear bumper repair | Ultrasonic parking sensors | $685 (AAA, 2023 MY vehicles (F-150, Rogue, Camry)) for ADAS parts and labor in AAA's test repairs |
| Side mirror replacement | Blind spot and surround view camera | $1,067 (AAA, 2023 MY vehicles (F-150, Rogue, Camry)) for ADAS parts and labor in AAA's test repairs |
| Windshield replacement | Forward-facing camera | 300-400 USD per calibration (Repairer Driven News, 2023) per calibration (Opus IVS figure cited in AutoBolt coverage) |
| Wheel alignment | Steering angle sensor, forward camera | No published figure in our data set |
A rear bumper hit with parking sensors behind the cover can cost far more than paint alone, mostly because of the sensor parts. Calibration is a separate question there: AAA's ADAS repair report found insurance professionals say ultrasonic parking sensors usually get a function test rather than a calibration, while Toyota's service information does call for a park sensor calibration. If a rear repair lists a sensor calibration, ask whether the carmaker requires it. Our bumper repair cost guide covers the cover and paint side.
Wheel alignment can also trigger a calibration. AAA's report explains that adjusting the steering angle sensor during an alignment can lead to a required calibration of the forward-facing camera, which may include every camera in a 360-degree system. IIHS notes that automakers call for calibration any time a sensor is removed and replaced or reinstalled, so ask whether a calibration is on the estimate whenever an alignment is.
Static vs. dynamic calibration: which method costs less
Neither static nor dynamic calibration is cheaper by default: the one per-calibration figure in our data, 300-400 USD per calibration (Repairer Driven News, 2023) for a windshield camera, isn't split by method, and your carmaker's procedure decides which method applies. The two are about equally common, at roughly 40% prevalence each in AutoBolt's windshield calibration report. Each has a catch. In AutoBolt's account, static calibration has a steeper learning curve and strict setup needs (level floor, lighting, a full tank of gas, an unloaded car). Dynamic calibration can be impossible in some climates.
| Point of comparison | Static calibration | Dynamic calibration |
|---|---|---|
| Where it happens | Indoors, on a level floor | On public roads |
| What it needs | Targets at measured distances, controlled lighting, an unloaded car | Clear lane lines, steady driving |
| Weather limits | Indoors, so weather doesn't stop it | AutoBolt: snow-covered roads, heavy rain, heavy traffic or low sun can make it impossible |
| Shop investment | Large: space, targets, training | Smaller: a scan tool and a road |
| Best for | Complex camera and radar jobs, any season | Simpler jobs when roads and weather cooperate |
So the method rarely sets the price on its own: even the Opus IVS windshield camera figure cited in AutoBolt coverage isn't broken out by method. AutoBolt also found more procedures now allow static or dynamic at the calibrator's choice, while dual calibration has become less common. In northern states, a dynamic-only procedure can mean a winter wait, so ask the shop how it schedules one.
Dealer, body shop or mobile calibrator: which to choose
The right place for an ADAS calibration, a line Mitchell's data averages at $600 (approx) (Repairer Driven News, 2025), is whichever shop has the space, training and equipment your carmaker's procedure calls for. IIHS found that some calibrations require large spaces, specialized training and expensive equipment, and that calibration software changes often. Owners in its survey whose repairs included a calibration also reported more post-repair problems.
| Your situation | Usually the better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New model or complex static calibration | Dealer service department | Has the carmaker's scan tool, targets and updates |
| Collision repair at a shop with its own equipment | Body shop in-house | Repair and calibration in one place, no extra trips |
| Windshield camera job, dynamic procedure | Mobile calibrator | Comes to the shop; ask if it can do static on site |
| Shop has no calibration equipment | Sublet to a dealer or calibration center | Shows up as a sublet line on the estimate |
Whoever does it, the calibration line on your estimate should name the system and the procedure. If the shop sends the work out, it usually appears as a sublet line; AAA's report gives a calibration sublet to a dealership service department as an example. A sublet calibration still lands on your bill, so ask which calibrations the shop does itself and which it sends out before you authorize the repair.
Does insurance pay for ADAS calibration?
Insurance usually pays for ADAS calibration when it's part of a covered collision repair, and calibrations already appear on 23 % (Repairer Driven News, 2025) of repairable appraisals in CCC's data. In an IIHS survey, most owners whose crash avoidance features were repaired said their insurance or warranty covered the complete cost, minus any deductible.
Coverage still depends on your policy and your state. A calibration after a covered crash is normally part of the claim. One after a separate job, such as a windshield replacement under glass coverage or an alignment you pay for yourself, follows the rules for that job. Check your policy and your state's insurance department if a calibration line is denied.
Calibrations often arrive late in the claim. CCC's Q3 2025 data, reported by Autobody News, showed only 48.5% of calibrations on the initial estimate and 51.5% on supplements, compared with 92.1% of scans on the initial estimate. A calibration supplement after the car is scanned is one common reason a final bill comes in above the first estimate.
How to check the calibration on your estimate and invoice
Check the calibration by matching three things: the estimate line, the scan reports and the calibration printout. AAA's report notes that an out-of-calibration sensor may set a trouble code that the pre-repair scan checks for and the post-repair scan is expected to clear, so the scan reports are your proof.
- Find the calibration line. It should name the system (front camera, front radar, blind spot) and say static, dynamic or both.
- Ask for the pre-repair and post-repair scans. They show which fault codes were present and that they were cleared.
- Get the calibration report. It shows the system calibrated, the date and whether the procedure passed.
- Match sublet lines to vendors. If a dealer or mobile service did the work, its invoice should match the sublet line.
- Test the features you use. Lane keeping, adaptive cruise and blind spot alerts should behave as before. If anything feels off, take the car back.
Before you sign, have the shop explain any line that's unclear. Our body shop estimate check walks through the rest of the quote. To decode sublet and labor codes, use our guide to reading an estimate line by line; how we estimate explains where our figures come from. You can also scan the shop's estimate in the Car Repair Cost app and get questions to bring back.
Check a repair estimate that lists a calibration
The Car Repair Cost team built the Car Repair Cost app to help you plan repairs like this one. If you already have a quote from a shop, scan it, pick a photo or import a PDF, and each line is marked fair, high or worth asking about, with questions to bring back to the shop. A "high" mark is a comparison, not a judgment of the shop.
Before you get a quote, take one to six photos of the damage and the app breaks the repair down into parts, labor and paint, with a typical range for your area. It's an AI estimate for planning, not an insurance appraisal or a shop quote: the final price depends on an in-person inspection, and only the shop's scan shows which sensors need calibration. Full access to the Car Repair Cost app requires a weekly or yearly subscription.
Questions
How much does ADAS calibration cost?
Mitchell's data puts the average calibration on a collision estimate at $600 (approx) (Repairer Driven News, 2025). For windshield cameras, Opus IVS used 300-400 USD per calibration (Repairer Driven News, 2023) per calibration in AutoBolt's coverage. Your price depends on the sensor, the method and who does the work.
Does a windshield replacement need camera calibration?
Often, yes. AutoBolt found 89% of model year 2023 and newer vehicles need a calibration after a windshield replacement, up from 25% of model year 2016 vehicles.
How long does ADAS calibration take?
It depends on the car and the method, and our sources don't publish a standard time. A static calibration needs an open bay and target setup, while AutoBolt notes a dynamic one can be impossible on snowy roads, in heavy rain or traffic, or with low sun, so ask the shop whether it's done in-house the same day or sent out.
Is calibration needed after a wheel alignment?
It can be. AAA explains that adjusting the steering angle sensor during an alignment can require a forward camera calibration, so ask the shop whether your car's maker requires one.
What does a calibration report show?
It shows which system was calibrated, the procedure used, the date and whether the calibration passed. Ask for it along with the pre-repair and post-repair scans.
