How much does bumper repair cost?
Bumper repair costs $50–$600 for a scuff or scratch and $325–$425 on average for a crack, according to Lemonade (insurer consumer guide, Feb 2022); replacing the cover adds the part, $100–$1,000, plus $200–$600 for installation and paint. Parking sensors or radar behind the bumper add parts and calibration on top.
From AAA's 2023 study of 2023 Toyota Camry, Nissan Rogue and Ford F-150 models, where all four rear ultrasonic sensors were damaged; $685 of it was sensor-related. It is not a typical price for every bumper: most bumper damage is a scuff, a scratch, a crack or a cover replacement without sensors.

Bumper repair calculator: plug in the hours from your quote
Bumper labor costs $68–$75 per hour in our two reference sources and paint and materials $40–$60 per refinish hour, so the hours on a bumper quote turn straight into a range. Total = (repair + refinish hours) × labor rate + refinish hours × paint and materials + the part, if replaced + sensor work. What changes the price of a bumper repair
Sensors behind the cover change a bumper bill the most: calibrations appeared on 23% of repairable collision estimates in 2025 (CCC), and AAA measured $685 of sensor-related cost in a minor rear hit. Four other factors move the price too.
Is your bumper repair quote fair?
A fair bumper quote bills paint and materials at $40–$60 per refinish hour, the range 84% of shops that bill this way charge, and a fender blend at no more than 50% of a full refinish. These bumper quote lines are worth a question:
Repair or replace a bumper cover?
Repairing a cracked bumper cover costs $325–$425 on average, according to Lemonade (insurer consumer guide, Feb 2022), while replacing it adds the part, from $150–$210 for the lowest-priced dealer front covers, plus $200–$600 for installation and paint.
Usually repairable
Scuffs, scratches, paint transfer, short cracks away from mounting points, small dents in the plastic that pop back out.
Usually replaced
Torn or missing sections, broken mounting tabs, several long cracks, damaged sensor brackets or mounts.
A body shop decides on a bumper cover after looking behind it: brackets, the energy absorber and the reinforcement bar can be damaged without showing. Dents in metal panels are covered on dent repair cost.
Should you file an insurance claim for bumper damage?
A bumper repair that costs less than or about the same as your deductible pays little or nothing through a claim, while a minor rear hit on a car with parking sensors averaged $1,698 in AAA's study, so compare the bumper quote with your own deductible first.
Read the bumper quote line by line (our line-by-line quote check guide shows what each line should look like). When the repair is well above the deductible, compare what the claim would pay with how your insurer says it could affect your premium before you decide.

The Car Repair Cost app, made by the team behind this guide, prices bumper damage from 1 to 6 photos: it names the damaged parts, says whether the cover looks repairable, and shows a range for each part, labor and paint line. See how the Car Repair Cost app estimates repair costs from photos.
Questions
Does a scuffed bumper need a new cover?
Not usually. Scuffs, scratches and paint transfer are normally sanded, filled and refinished, so no part is bought. Replacement comes up when the plastic is torn, a mounting tab is broken or a sensor mount is damaged.
Why is the paint blended into the fender?
Blending fades new paint into the panel next to it so small color differences don't show. The MOTOR estimating guide allows 50% of that panel's full refinish time for a blend; it should not be billed as a full refinish of the neighboring panel.
Is an aftermarket bumper cover OK?
Many shops use them, but fit and finish vary, and some insurers or lease contracts require dealer parts. A parts retailer's 2026 estimate puts aftermarket covers from $120 to $350 and OEM covers from $300 to $600, part only (PartCatalog). Our own dealer price tables on this page cover OEM parts only.
Why does a bumper with sensors cost so much more?
Sensors, their brackets and the calibration afterward add parts and equipment time. In AAA's study, the sensor-related share of a minor rear hit was $685 of $1,698. Mitchell puts the average calibration at about $600, and CCC found calibrations on 23% of repairable estimates in 2025.
Do the part prices include paint?
No. They are dealer online prices for the bare part. Bumper covers are generally sold unpainted, so a replacement also needs refinish labor and paint materials.
